Scottie Scheffler remains money in the bank on the PGA Tour earnings list

Scottie Scheffler posted his fifth second-place finish on the PGA Tour on July 26 in the 3M Open. Rookie Jackson Koivun was rock-solid and didn’t open the door for Scheffler by making mistakes down the stretch at the TPC Twin Cities, so Scheffler settled for another runner-up check ($959,000) while Koivun made $1,584,000 for his first PGA Tour title.

That gives Scheffler nearly $17 million in earnings this season and with all of his closest pursuers taking the week off, he increased his lead over No. 2 Cameron Young to nearly $3 million, and his margin over No. 3 Matt Fitzpatrick to more than $6 million.

Young is playing the next two weeks, in the Rocket Classic and the Wyndham Championship, where he is defending his title. He would have to win both tournaments (collecting $3,150,000 if he does) to pass Scheffler heading into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, where purses in the first two events, for official money (the FedEx St. Jude Classic and the BWM Championship), will be $20 million, with $3.6 million for the winners.

The PGA Tour money race will end after the first two playoff events. The Tour Championship, which pays the winner and the FedEx Cup champion $10 million, does not count for official earnings.

Scheffler is seeking his fifth consecutive PGA Tour money title, which would be a Tour record. He’s currently tied with Tiger Woods (1999-2002) and Tom Watson (1977-1980) for the most consecutive years as the leading money winner.

Koivun, by the way, jumped to 75th on the money list by winning his third professional start. He has $1,677,000.
