Scottie Scheffler Owns the Moment With Response to PGA Tour’s Message originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler just started his newest campaign to bring home a Claret Jug, which is something that’s still missing in his otherwise stacked collection of achievements.
But before he even took his first shot at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, Scheffler scored a notable win back home, as he won the ESPY Award for Best Golfer.
Up against fellow PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy, LPGA’s Nelly Korda and 2025 US Women’s Open winner Maja Stark, Scheffler bested the field and won the award, which can serve as further inspiration for him to win The Open.
The PGA Tour also acknowledged Scheffler’s ESPYs victory with a congratulatory post on social media.
“Add it to the trophy case 🏆,” the post read.
Late Thursday, Scheffler responded to the PGA Tour’s post.
“Thank you – very grateful!” the three-time major winner wrote.
As for his performance at The Open Championship, Scheffler finished the first round tied for sixth spot through 18 holes with a 3-under score. He had bogeys on the ninth and 11th holes, but recovered down the stretch, with a pair of birdies on the final three holes.
Scheffler has yet to win The Open Championship, but he’s never missed the cut in this tournament, thus far in his career.
It’s worth noting, however, that this is also just his first time playing the event at Royal Portrush.
He made his The Open Championship debut in 2021 with a T-8 at Royal St. George’s, had a T-21 in 2022 at St. Andrews and a T-23 at Royal Liverpool in 2023. In 2024, he came up with his best finish at The Open Championship with a T-7 at Royal Troon.
