Golf superstar Scottie Scheffler found himself ranked number one according to the Official World Golf Ranking on Wednesday, just hours before he was scheduled to tee off at 2:03 p.m. ET at the Texas Children’s Houston Open at Memorial Park Golf Course on Thursday.
With a $9.5 million purse on the line, golfers are locked in for what is expected to be a fiercely competitive tournament.
Video surfaced Wednesday of Scheffler responding to a question about his 97 weeks-long stay at the top of the rankings, to which the Ridgewood, New Jersey born golf superstar responded with a Tiger Woods themed answer that caught media attention.
“I think it may have been this week or last week…You have now, only Tiger has spent more consecutive weeks at number one than you,” a member of the media asked Scheffler.
“Do you allow yourself to enjoy that at all and just appreciate the work that you put in to be able to take that, or are you just trying to kind of put it behind you since you’re still in the moment?”
Scheffler spoke at length in response.
Woods set the record with 281 consecutive weeks at the top of the rankings, dwarfing Scheffler’s current 97-week streak.
“I mean, is it a nice accomplishment? Yes. You know, I think it’s something cool to see from some good starts I’ve had in the last couple of years.
“And, you know, I’ve definitely put in a lot of work to have that type of achievement. Tiger’s still got the record by about eight years or something like that.
“So, not really thinking about it too much. But at the end of the day, each tournament is a tournament and you start at even par. You know, showing up here, being number one in the world doesn’t do me any good.
‘Really, it just simply doesn’t. And so at the end of the day, I’m focused on the tournament, the task at hand and the rankings are the rankings.
“I don’t really care what they are.”
