Scottie Scheffler Earns New Nickname as He Sits Atop The Open Leaderboard originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
World No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, came into Friday’s second round of The Open Championship one shot behind the leaders.
When Scheffler finished his second round of play at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland on Friday, he found himself sitting atop the leaderboard with a score of 10-under. This came thanks to his career-low round of 64.
While he is likely thrilled with that result, he may also be excited to hear that a new nickname has surfaced on social media.
As he was waiting to tee off, Scheffler could be seen standing under an umbrella with his caddie, Ted Scott. With the rain off and on throughout the day, Scheffler naturally opted to throw his hood on between shots.
Paying homage to the viral 2017 look by former NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Golf.com deemed him “Hoodie Scottie.”

While Scheffler is likely more concerned with hoping that the result sticks, as it would net him $3.1 million, having a unique nickname or look also isn’t the worst thing.
As of writing, the leaderboard is tightly contested and will certainly be a battle down the stretch. Here is how it stands at this time:
- Scottie Scheffler (-10)
- Matt Fitzpatrick (-9)
- Brian Harman (-8), Haotong Li (-8)
If Scheffler were to hang on, it’d be his fourth victory of the year, and bring his earnings to around $19 million on the season.
