Scottie Scheffler Candid Admission on Son Bennett Post-Winning the Open Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Scottie Scheffler walked into Royal Portrush like a man on a mission, and he walked out with his fourth major title this time, the Claret Jug in hand. With a composed final-round 68, Scheffler finished 17-under to claim the 153rd Open Championship by four shots, never allowing the field a chance to catch him.

It was clinical. From the moment he fired an iron to within a foot of the cup on the opening hole after an early tee shot into the rough, it was clear this would be Scheffler’s day.

But what made Sunday even more meaningful wasn’t just what happened on the fairways it was what happened on the green afterward. Surrounded by his family on the 18th, Scheffler reflected on what golf has given him and what he hopes it might one day offer his son, Bennett.

“So yeah, it’s pretty special to be able to celebrate here with my family,” he said. “I hope Bennett’s able to get into golf one day… the game of golf has taught me a tremendous amount.”

Harris English finished second at 13-under, but the gap never truly closed. The rest of the leaderboard, including Chris Gotterup and Matthew Fitzpatrick, was left to chase shadows.

Scheffler added, “You call penalties on yourself… you learn a lot of good life lessons playing golf.”

The man who just joined Tiger Woods in winning four majors in exactly 1,197 days since his first, doesn’t just want trophies he wants his son to love the game, too. “I hope he enjoys it as much as I do.”
