Scheffler Completes Fifteenth Consecutive Sub-70 Round, Sits Second at BMW Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
If you follow professional golf with any regularity, you’d notice that Scottie Scheffler’s name has become a fixture on PGA Tour leaderboards this entire season.
On Friday afternoon at Caves Valley outside of Baltimore, the 29-year-old produced his mind-blowing fifteenth consecutive sub-70 round as he posted a 5-under 65 in the second round to reach 9-under for the event. He trails tournament leader Robert MacIntyre (14-under) by five shots.
Scheffler didn’t make a bogey all day Friday on Caves Valley, the same course that staged this event in 2021 when Patrick Cantlay won it over Bryson DeChambeau.
“Yeah, bogey-free is always nice,” Scheffler told reporters after his round. “I would have liked to get to have gotten a couple better looks down the stretch, but didn't hit as many fairways the last few holes, and out here with the way the holes are shaped, you've got to be in play, and I did a good job of saving pars when I needed to on the back.”
Perhaps the best example of saving pars on the back nine came on the par 5 16th when he drained a five-foot putt to keep the momentum of his round going heading into the final two holes.
MacIntyre had a much earlier tee time than Scheffler during Friday’s round, so even as the day started four back for the world number 1, by the time the Texan teed off in the 1 o’clock hour, the deficit had already more than doubled, and Scheffler had some catching up to do.
But stringing together a mistake-free 65 certainly helps keep Scheffler’s hopes of a winning week alive
“I knew kind of going into (Friday) that I was going to be fighting a little bit of an uphill battle, and did a good job of hanging in there and staying in the tournament,” Scheffler said.
MacIntyre and Scheffler will play in the final group Saturday going off at 1:45pm ET. The BMW Championship is the second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs that culminate with the top 30 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs standings Sunday night moving on to next week's Tour Championship in Atlanta.
