Europe’s triumph at last year’s Ryder Cup was unfortunately overshadowed.

The crowd behaviour at Bethpage Black, and the abuse thrown at Rory McIlroy and co from the galleries, was so abhorrent that the National Guard was called to the course to prevent things from escalating out of hand.

The European players slammed the behaviour, and the Americans looked embarrassed by it at times. PGA of America CEO had to walk back his comments defending the fans.

Where we should have been focusing purely on Europe’s incredible win in New York, too much negativity was dedicated to discussing the fans’ actions at Bethpage.

Did this event tarnish the reputation of the Ryder Cup for good? McIlroy was asked as the event heads to Adare Manor in Ireland next year.

Rory McIlroy discusses the state of the Ryder Cup ahead of Adare Manor in 2027

McIlroy was asked on the Fried Egg Golf YouTube channel is he thinks the Ryder Cup is currently in a good place, and the Northern Irishman responded, “Yeah, it is. I think, from a competition standpoint, it’s amazing.

“It’s the biggest rivalry we have in our game. I think the spirit in which the game is played could change, and that’s something that we’re going to hopefully address in Ireland next time around.

“Because the Ryder Cup was created to be played in a certain spirit, and I don’t think it was played in that spirit in New York.

“I mean, between the players it probably was, but, obviously what happened with the fans, it went over the line in some places and just trying to pull that side of it, that part of it back a little bit, and just sort of have people understand that our game is a little different than than other sports.

“And I think that’s what makes it so great and that’s a good thing. Golf doesn’t need to be like these other sports. It’s got enough great attributes to stand on its own.”

Rory McIlroy explains the effect of the Ryder Cup on Irish golf

This is Ireland’s first Ryder Cup since 2006, when Europe took a commanding win at the K Club.

Ireland’s DNA is woven through this competition, as the country has produced some of Europe’s greatest players. McIlroy hopes that the event at Adare Manor will help to bring through the next generation of players from the Emerald Isle.

He said, “I think it’ll be a big deal. It’ll be 20 years since we had it last. I remember going to that with my dad and watching the Sunday singles. I think Ireland has done an unbelievable job in developing players, and you see some of these players come through.

“Back from like say Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, McGinley, you had Graeme McDowell, myself, Shane, Tom McKibbin, now for example, and hopefully it continues. But we’ve done a really good job of being able to inspire the next generation.

“And hopefully what the Ryder Cup does is inspire the next generation of Irish golfers. I think that would be a great outcome from the event.”

This could be a historic event, as Europe eye their third straight Ryder Cup win, and hopefully that will inspire the next player to follow in the footsteps of McIlroy.
