Few believed the San Francisco 49ers would defeat the Super Bowl favorite Los Angeles Rams in Australia.
But Richard Sherman always knew.
“They were in the broadcast talking about ‘undefeated season’ and almost everybody picked them to win this game like it wasn’t gonna be close. And I told people, I don’t know, I don’t have the Rams winning this game because Kyle Shanahan has Sean McVay’s number,” Sherman said on his podcast.

“And Rams fans said, oh you’re just a hater. Do I look like a hater now? Who looks right? I’m right. Ball knower. I know ball.”

The Rams were considered Super Bowl favorites even before trading for reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and cornerback Trent McDuffie. But Aaron Donald’s return was the icing on the cake for the juggernaut Rams.

Or at least it seemed to be.
But on Thursday, the Rams looked sluggish. The squad didn’t appear to be the superteam everyone had thought they’d be.
Many were quick to point out the travel plans, which may have been the wrong choice for the Rams. But head coach Sean McVay immediately gave the 49ers credit for a commanding 27-7 win over LA.
“First of all, congratulations to the 49ers. They outplayed us in every facet,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said postgame.

“I didn’t do nearly a good enough job. This is a humbling day for us, and this will define us only if we allow it to. And today was one of those days. I always look inside out. I didn’t do a good enough job getting us ready to go.”

The Rams’ performance in Melbourne shouldn’t be a reason to panic just yet, but any hopes of an untarnished season have gone out the door. As for the 49ers, it appears their defense entered the 2026 season with question marks but put all doubts about the unit to rest against the Rams.
