The Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers reportedly agreed to a massive package trade that puts an end to the J.T. Miller speculation.

After plenty of speculation, rumors and quotes about Miller’s rift with Elias Pettersson throughout the season, Vancouver sent Miller to one of his former teams on Friday, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli and other reports.

Defensemen Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington are also going to the Rangers, per the reports.

In return, the Canucks get center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a 2025 first-round draft pick that’s protected. If the pick ends up in the top 13, the Canucks will instead receive an unprotected first-round pick in 2026.

The Rangers drafted Miller 15th overall in the 2011 NHL draft. He played 371 games over parts of six seasons with the Blueshirts, recording 72 goals and 100 assists for 172 points. In February 2018, New York traded him to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal that included Ryan McDonagh and Vladislav Namestnikov.

With Vancouver, Miller played 404 games and scored 152 and 437 points, the best stretch of his 13-year career. This season, the 31-year-old has the second-most points on the Canucks with 35, and nine of those are goals.

The Canucks asked Miller to waive his no-move clause to make this trade with the Rangers possible. GM Patrik Allvin also did not retain any money on Miller’s $8-million cap hit. His contract expires after the 2027-28 season.

Brannstrom now heads to his third NHL organization in the past year and fourth in his career. He was with the Ottawa Senators since 2019 when they acquired him from the Vegas Golden Knights. Ottawa did not give Brannstrom a qualifying offer in the off-season, which made the pending RFA a UFA. He signed with the Colorado Avalanche, who moved him to Vancouver in October.

The 25-year-old has played 28 games for the Canucks and scored three goals and five assists for eight points. He’s also played in eight contests for AHL Abbotsford, recording two goals and 12 points.

Dorrington was a sixth-round draft pick by the Canucks in the 2022 draft. He’s spent the last three seasons with Northeastern University in the NCAA. This season, he’s scored two goals and 10 points in 23 games.

Chytil, 25, was drafted by the Rangers 21st overall in the 2017 draft and has played for the team for part of eight seasons. This season, the Czech native has 11 goals and 20 points in 41 games for New York.

Chytil was reportedly included in the first offer between the two teams earlier in the month before talks broke down.

Mancini had a hot start to his NHL career earlier this season. In his first 15 games, the 22-year-old scored one goal and provided four helpers.

Since Dec. 22, he’s been a regular with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In 23 AHL games, he has three goals and 10 points.

The Hockey News’ Tim Hiebert projects Chytil to slot in on Vancouver’s second line and Miller to potentially play beside Chris Kreider with the Rangers.

The Rumored Rift That Led To This Point

Rumors popped up this season of a conflict between Miller and center Pettersson, and they didn’t stop even picking up around the Christmas break. Both players denied a rift existed between them. Miller told reporters they were wasting their time.

“It’s good,” Pettersson told reporters in late December. “I don’t know why people try and make s— up.”

Canucks captain Quinn Hughes and coach Rick Tocchet also said in late December that disagreements are going to happen, and it’s about the common goal.

On Jan. 28, the Globe and Mail published an interview with Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford, that acknowledged some chemistry issues.

“I felt like for a long time that there was a solution here because everybody has worked on it, including the parties involved,” Rutherford told the Globe and Mail. “But it only gets resolved for a short period of time, and then it festers again, and so it certainly appears like there’s not a good solution that would keep this group together.”

Rutherford added that it’s difficult to be a consistent team when there’s too much going on in the dressing room to concentrate on what to do on the ice.

Trade rumors and speculation circulated with scenarios for Miller and scenarios for Pettersson. The Canucks ended up trading Miller.

More to come.
