In his most recent 32 Thoughts column, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the New Jersey Devils were one of the teams who made a serious push for Brandon Saad before he signed with the Vegas Golden Knights. Friedman also noted that the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tampa Bay Lightning were in the mix.

Saad, 32, mutually terminated his contract with the St. Louis Blues back on Jan. 30 and quickly signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Vegas Golden Knights.

With the Devils needing more secondary offensive production, it is not too surprising to hear that they were in the mix for Saad. In 43 games this season split between the Blues and Golden Knights, he has eight goals and 17 points. He also has hit the 20-goal mark in seven NHL seasons, including this past campaign when he had 26 goals and 42 points in 82 games with St. Louis.

Bringing in Saad could have been a good move for the Devils, but he ultimately decided to go to another contender in the Golden Knights. It will be intriguing to see how the former Devils target performs with Vegas from here.
