Jacob deGrom brought his former Cy Young stuff in a brilliant start against the Seattle Mariners Thursday.

But it wasn’t enough for a Rangers win as the Mariners rallied for a 4-3 win. It added up to a spoiled outing for deGrom and a tough blow for the Rangers in their fight from behind to make the postseason.

deGrom was virtually unhittable in six one-hit innings in which he recorded 12 strikeouts. The strikeout tally was a season high for the 38-year old who won consecutive Cy Young awards in 2018 and 2019.

He struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced and was perfect through five innings. The slider and four-seam fastball that made him baseball’s most dominant pitcher at his peak repeatedly perplexed Seattle hitters.
