Rickie Fowler entered the 2026 BMW Championship inside the FedExCup top 30. But a single week at Bellerive Country Club was enough to end his PGA Tour season. After four rounds, he dropped out of the top 30 and failed to qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. While this is heartbreaking, that’s how the playoff format is. In fact, golf analyst Trey Wingo believes that’s what the format is supposed to do.
On the Trey Wingo Golf show, Wingo received a fan question asking if Fowler and Bud Cauley falling out of the top 30 was playoff drama or too brutal.

“No, it’s playoff drama. I mean, like again, if we want to have a playoff, let’s have a playoff. I mean, the postseason is filled with heartbreak for some of the greatest players in every single sport, and they just didn’t find it. They didn’t have it that day. They didn’t give it. Go back and look at Gerrit Cole in the World Series. Was it last year or two years ago in the fifth inning?” Wingo said.
“They couldn’t get an out. It was- I mean, Gerrit Cole’s one of the best pitchers in baseball. If they had found a way to win that game where they had the lead at Yankee Stadium, that might have changed the entire postseason, but they couldn’t get out of that fifth inning. Gerrit, that was the worst fifth inning, I think, in Yankee postseason history, and it cratered their chances to win. At the end of the day, when playoffs are playoffs, it’s time to put up or shut up.”

Wingo referenced Game 5 of the 2024 World Series: Cole’s fifth-inning collapse cost the Yankees a 5-0 lead, and they eventually lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6. And there are many similar incidents across sports, including golf, too.

Fowler’s exit is the drama fans wanted—and the heartbreak it demands. Entering the BMW Championship at No. 30 in the FedExCup standings, he needed to finish inside the top 30 to advance to the Tour Championship but dropped to 33rd after finishing tied for 37th.
Even Bud Cauley couldn’t make the top 30. He entered the tournament ranked 29th in the FedExCup standings, but dropped to 34th after finishing tied for 44th. Kurt Kitayama also dropped from 28th to 31st.
Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay, and Robert MacIntyre climbed into the top 30 in their place. All three started outside the top 30 at the BMW Championship, but thanks to good play over four days, they secured spots in the Tour Championship.
Fowler’s season showed real growth: five top-10s (vs. three last year) across 16 cuts in 21 starts.

While he improved this season, the playoff format does not take that into account. In fact, it considers nothing other than consistent performance. Consider the example of Justin Thomas. Because of back surgery in November 2025, JT missed several events this year. But despite the late start, his goal was to reach Atlanta.
Ranked 44th, Thomas needed a solo seventh to crack the top 30 but finished tied for 16th.
As Trey Wingo noted, that’s what playoff drama is, and neither Rickie Fowler nor anyone else can complain about it.
