JORDAN — Olivia Cordes and Neva Anderson have spent countless hours together on golf courses.

The Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa teammates have been two of the top players in Section 1, Class 2A for two years.

Tuesday, Cordes (in her third Class 2A state meet) and Anderson (in her first state meet) circled the course at the Ridges at Sand Creek next to one another. That comfort paid off, as both sit in the top 10 after the opening day of the 2025 Class 2A girls golf state meet.

Cordes shot a 6-over-par 78 and is in a three-way tie for seventh place with 18 holes remaining. Anderson shot an 8-over-par 80 and is tied for 10th place at the meet’s midpoint.

Anderson teed off at 7:54 a.m. Tuesday, followed eight minutes later, in the next group, by Cordes.

Anderson, a junior, put together one of the more consistent rounds of the opening day, making 11 pars, including six on the front nine. She made nothing worse than a bogey on the back nine (making three bogeys) and she birdied the final hole — the 416-yard, par-5 18th — to finish at 8-over-par 80.

Cordes also finished her round with 11 pars and a birdie (on the 308-yard, par-4 2nd hole). She had a double bogey on the par-4 14th hole, her only score of the day higher than a bogey.

Anderson will tee off at 8:02 a.m. Wednesday in the final round, while Cordes will tee off at 8:38 a.m. Both will start on hole No. 1.

Genevieve Birkeland of Pequot Lakes shot a 1-over 73 to take the lead after 18 holes, while Detroit Lakes’ Sophie Christianson is one shot back. Cordes is just five shots off the lead and Anderson is seven back.

Section 1-2A team champion Lake City is in fourth place after the opening round. The Tigers shot an opening round score of 349 and sit just two shots back of third-place Hill-Murray (347). Detroit Lakes is in first (320), while Minnewaska Area is in second (328).

Lake City is led by junior Alyana Atkinson in 20th place individually; she shot an 11-over-par 83 on Tuesday, with 10 pars and five bogeys. Tigers senior Mattie Mears is in 26th place, two shots back of Atkinson, at 85, and sophomore Taylor Davidson is tied for 35th (87). Julia Huettl rounded out Lake City’s scoring, with a 94 (tied for 62nd place).

Other Section 1 golfers in the field include Caledonia’s Hayden Harms (89, tied 40th place); Red Wing’s Hallie Johnson (90, tied 47th); Lourdes’ Allison Deutsch (91, tied 48th); Lake City’s Jordyn Dicke (96, tied 70th) and Lake City’s Marlena Brunkow (102, tied 76th).

BECKER, Minn. — Addison McCabe has quietly put together one of the best seasons in southeastern Minnesota.

Just an eighth-grader, the Lanesboro girls golf standout is among the top 15 in scoring average in the area. She also finished as the Southeast Conference championship runner-up and placed third in the Section 1, Class 1A meet.

McCabe showed the same level of calm and composure Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Course, firing a 12-over-par 84 on the opening day of the Class 1A state meet to sit in a three-way tie for fifth place. Her 84 was the best score by a Section 1-1A golfer on the meet’s opening day.

Fillmore Central senior Myleigh Scheevel also sits in the top 10 at the state meet’s halfway point. Scheevel shot an opening round 86 and is tied for ninth place.

Dawson-Boyd senior Lindsey Lund leads the individual meet, at 78, while Brooke Brekke of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City is second, at 79.

McCabe’s round had its highs and lows, with most of the highs occurring on the back nine. She made seven pars in the round and played the final eight holes in 2-over, including a birdie on the 444-yard, par-5 16th hole.

Scheevel also had seven pars and a birdie in her round of 14-over. Her birdie came early, on the 386-yard, par-5 hole No. 5.

Her round of 86 helped Fillmore Central — the defending state champion, making its 11th straight state-meet appearance — to a first-round team score of 366, good for third place. Leader Dawson-Boyd is at 338, while Park Christian sits in second at 348.

Other Section 1 golfers include Lanesboro’s Jentrey Schreiber (91, tied 29th place) and Ellie McCabe (94, tied 41st); and LeRoy-Ostrander/GM’s Gabby Tangren (105, tied 63rd).

COON RAPIDS — Flora Bolster and Ailani Thiravong have been close on their scorecards all season.

Bolster entered the Class 3A state meet on Tuesday with a season scoring average of 83.07.

So did Thiravong.

The two Section 1 rivals were even placed in the same group of Tuesday’s first round at Bunker Hills Golf Course, teeing off together at 7:38 a.m. on hole No. 1.

All that considered, it’s no surprise they sit in the same spot on the leaderboard after the opening round of the state meet. Bolster and Thiravong both shot rounds of 17-over-par 89, and sit in a tie for 61st place with 18 holes remaining.

Bolster settled in after a slow start, making four bogeys and three pars to close the front nine. She made two more pars and five bogeys on the back nine.

Thiravong finished her round with five pars and nine bogeys.
