Phil Mickelson was part of 12 USA Ryder Cup teams as a player. He won 18 matches, lost 22, and tied seven. He’s earned the most points in American history. He was also a vice captain in 2021.
But he’s done with the event.
On Saturday, fellow LIV Golf member Lee Westwood tweeted at Mickelson asking if he’d “fancy” going to Adare Manor in 2027, the next time Team USA and Team Europe go to battle.
On Sunday, Golf.com posted a graphic on Twitter featuring Westwood’s post with the caption “Captain Phil 2027? Let the rumors begin.”
A few hours later, Lefty responded. If you were hoping to see him don red, white, and blue again, we have bad news for you.
“No rumors. My Ryder Cup involvement is over. I’m happy being a spectator and rooting for Team USA,” Mickelson wrote.
To his credit, he was watching all the action at Bethpage Black. He was tweeting throughout the event and was rooting the Americans on every step of the way.
His move to LIV all but sealed his Ryder Cup fate. But with Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Tyrrell Hatton still playing in it, maybe there’s a future where Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, and other players who left will have a chance to return to the biennial event.
