Phil Mickelson’s March declaration on social media that Scottie Scheffler wouldn’t win again before the Ryder Cup has officially become golf’s favorite joke.

CBS Golf analyst Shane Bacon dug up Mickelson’s bold take on Sunday and instantly turned social media into a roasting pit. Scheffler, the consensus world No. 1, has since reeled off five PGA Tour victories and looks unstoppable, riding a streak of top-10 finishes over his last 12 events.

Bacon amplified the viral moment by quoting Mickelson’s original post alongside his own gleeful commentary. “I’m convinced this is the best golf tweet of all time and won’t take any other submissions,” he wrote.

Fans responded with savage precision, shredding Mickelson’s misplaced confidence.

Scheffler’s Historic Tear Leaves Mickelson Looking Foolish

Scheffler has authored one of the most dominant stretches on the PGA Tour in recent memory. The 29-year-old won The CJ Cup and two weeks later secured a PGA Championship win. Since then, Scheffler has earned wins at the Memorial Tournament, The Open Championship and last week’s BMW Championship.

He became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 and 2007 with five or more wins in consecutive seasons.

Scheffler’s 12 consecutive top-10 finishes underscore consistency rarely seen in today’s era of parity. He leads the PGA Tour in scoring average at 68.11 and ranks No. 1 in strokes gained: tee-to-green, illustrating a complete command across all phases.

His red-hot form makes him the clear leader in Ryder Cup qualifying (37180.33 points) for the United States and positions him as the emotional centerpiece of a team attempting to reclaim momentum.

With each week he stays atop leaderboards, Mickelson’s tweet ages more comically.

Fans Roast Mickelson for Misguided Scheffler Take

Once Bacon brought it back, Mickelson’s X post drew instant mockery.

One fan offered a tempered view, writing, “Obviously he was just trying to stir things up to be fun. I’m not sure he thought people would be gullible and think he was serious. That’s just Phil’s personality. But yeah Scottie’s not the guy to be poking.”

Others were far more blunt. “Takes don’t get much hotter,” posted one user.

“Yeah, that didn’t age well,” chimed in another.

The reactions kept coming: “It’s the gift that keeps on giving,” one fan said. Another quipped, “Phil was once the modern equivalent of Arnold Palmer. Now he’s Fuzzy Zoeller.”

A final jab summed up the moment perfectly with some appreciation: “Gotta respect the big dog for not deleting it and letting everyone quote it all this time.”

Scheffler now heads into the Tour Championship as the clear betting favorite (+150 to win), according to FanDuel Sportsbook, and makes Mickelson’s post look even worse with every stroke.
