The PGA Tour will undergo a huge makeover ahead of the 2028 season.
After listening to the fans, Brian Rolapp recently announced that the format of the Tour Championship will change from 2028 onwards.

Most golf fans and analysts are very excited about the changes being made to the Tour Championship.

A new era of golf is most certainly upon us now, with the Championship Series and Challenger Series set to be implemented on the PGA Tour in 2028.
And the PGA Tour’s finale switching to match-play will be a great way for the season to end. However, that’s not to say that the change will be a seamless one.
PGA Tour warned they may face a ‘problem’ by changing Tour Championship format
Trey Wingo has outlined one potential concern he has about the impending Tour Championship changes,
He spoke on his Trey Wingo Golf YouTube channel about how the Tour Championship changing to match-play could be problematic for the PGA Tour.

“I do like the way they’re doing this, having match-play, it’s going to be very different,“ Wingo said.
“So I like that. But that’s always going to be a problem for TV, right?
“I remember when Darren Clarke and Tiger were playing at the match-play, was it in La Costa? And, you know, Darren just kind of kicked his butt, and we had to go, ‘let’s go back to the third-place match’.

“I mean, that’s gonna be part of it.
“I do like the fact that they have these matches for the playoffs in 2028. It’s four matches, one v one, two days in a row.
“It is what it is, and, look, I think that the idea to change things up for the playoffs, which we talked about last week, I think, is a very good thing.

“There are just some things that you can’t account for when you’re talking about match-play.“
Wingo is correct in his assessment here.
Tour Championship concerns outweighed by exciting pros
The poor viewing experience for fans watching the latter stages of match-play events on TV has always been one of the main reasons why there aren’t many events played under that format on the PGA Tour.
There simply isn’t that much golf to watch, especially when the tournament reaches the semi-final stage.
There is also the big concern that the best players in the world could be eliminated early from the tournament.

It will be possible for the likes of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler to miss out on the latter stages of the Tour Championship and that would be a nightmare scenario for the TV companies.
However, my opinion is that the pros far outweigh the cons.
The Tour Championship desperately needed freshening up, and the match-play format that will be implemented in 2028 will definitely provide that.
The fact the tournament will be held over two weeks on different golf courses, both of which will be iconic venues, is majorly exciting.
Brian Rolapp has made plenty of exciting changes since taking over as the CEO of the PGA Tour, and switching the Tour Championship to match-play might just be his best move yet.
