PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The clock is ticking but the PGA Tour confirmed it still is considering changing the format of the Tour Championship, which could be voted on for this season at its February board meeting.
Golfweek spoke with multiple player directors about the Tour Championship format change earlier this month. During a roundtable discussion with members of the media on Wednesday, Tour officials said the format of the 30-man field tournament held at East Lake GC in Atlanta in August and that decides the winner of the season-long FedEx Cup is being evaluated once again.
The FedEx Cup playoff structure has been tweaked several times since its inception in 2007, most recently in 2019 when it adopted the starting-strokes format that handicaps the field into a staggered start. Scottie Scheffler, who started with at least a two-stroke lead over his closest competitor, won the FedEx Cup but didn’t shoot the low 72-hole score.
The Tour is considering numerous changes as part of its Fan Forward initiatives related to broadcasts, competitions, player profiles and on-site experience.
“What’s the best version of the Tour Championship?” said Andy Weitz, chief marketing and communications officer and executive vice president, investor relations. “We know how it works today, we know how the format implemented in 2019 has worked well, but the question is could it be better?”
The Tour implemented a wave of changes that were implemented late last year and will impact the 2026 season. But the Tour is on the offensive and isn’t resting on its laurels.
“As Andy said, if through this collaborative effort if we find a format that everyone feels really positive about, we may implement it as soon as this year,” said the Tour’s chief competitions officer, Tyler Dennis.
Finding a format that players, TV broadcast partners and most importantly, umbrella sponsor FedEx can agree on before the Feb. 24 board meeting is a big “if.” Stay tuned.
