Two points events left for players to make the top 70 and qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs
Scottie Scheffler wins The Open at Portrush
Scottie Scheffler called his Open win at Portrush hard to describe, saying he’s just a kid from Texas living his dream.
The Open
- Two PGA Tour events remain before the FedEx Cup Playoffs: the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship.
- Scottie Scheffler has clinched the regular season points race for the FedEx Cup.
- The top 70 players in FedEx Cup points will advance to the playoffs.
Golf’s major championships are completed and prior to the Ryder Cup in late September, the PGA Tour has one big issue left: who’s winning the FedEx Cup?
There are two points events remaining, the 3M Open at the TPC Twin Cities near Minneapolis, beginning on July 24, and the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., July 31-Aug. 3. Each tournament winner will earn 500 points.
The top 70 on the FedEx Cup points list advance to the FedEx Cup Playoffs beginning Aug. 7-10 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. The current No. 70 bubble player is Keith Mitchell of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Emiliano Grillo is only two points behind.
It’s a bit of a gap to the next player, No. 72 Davis Thompson of St. Simons Island, who is 37 points behind Mitchell. But there’s a batch of players who are right on Thompson’s heels: Eric Cole is six points behind him, Alex Smalley eight points in arrears and Christaan Bezuidenhout another 18 points back.
One thing is settled: British Open champion Scottie Scheffler has clinched the regular-season points race. He’s got a 1,362-point lead over No. 2 Rory McIlroy, so even if McIlroy were to enter the next two events (he’s not) and win, he still wouldn’t catch Scheffler.
