PGA Tour Golfer Withdraws Day Before the 3M Open originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The 3M Open is back for its seventh edition at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, and tees off on Thursday. As the PGA Tour season heads through its final stretch, this tournament plays a vital role in the FedEx Cup standings.

With all four majors complete, only two events remain before the start of the three-event FedEx Cup playoffs.

Just two days before the action begins at the 3M Open, the field continues to change. The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday that Alejandro Tosti had withdrawn from the event and Ben Martin, a 37-year-old PGA Tour pro, replaces him.

The late add is a huge gift for Martin, who is buried at 173rd in the FedEx Cup points race, about 500 points outside of qualifying for FedEx Cup playoffs. Martin is still mathematically alive to make the playoffs because the winner this week and next will earn 500 FedEx Cup points. The farther down the leaderboard a golfer finishes each week, the fewer points he earns. A couple of top 10 finishes could be enough to get Martin into the first playoff event, though Martin has only one top-10 finish this season.

Held at the most northerly venue regularly played on the Tour schedule, TPC Twin Cities is a 7,431-yard Arnold Palmer-designed course known for its large greens, tricky rough, and water hazards on 11 holes. Despite the course’s beauty, the field is weaker this year due to its position on the schedule immediately following The Open Championship. Only three of the world’s top 25 are scheduled to tee it up.

Defending champion Jhonattan Vegas and former former champions Lee Hodges and Tony Finau headline the event. Finau has four top-12 finishes here and boasts an impressive 24-round average of 67.71 at this course.
