RAPID CITY — Top-10 individual finishes by Asher Dannenbring and Carter McCormick guided the Mitchell High School boys golf team to a fourth-place finish at the East/West Invite.

The two-day event to tee off the 2025 season was contested at Spearfish Canyon Country Club on Monday and Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City, the site of October’s state championships, on Tuesday. Both courses played a par-72 layout.

As a team, Mitchell recorded a two-day total of 615 strokes, with 321 at Spearfish Canyon and 294 at Meadowbrook. O’Gorman topped the team standings at 583 strokes, a team score of 7-over par between its four top golfers. The Knights were under par as a team on Tuesday, shooting 285, three shots under as a team. Sioux Falls Lincoln (591) was the only other squad to come in under 600, with Harrisburg (605) in third. The Kernels were in sixth after the first day but outperformed both Sioux Falls Washington (634) and Spearfish (638) by more than 20 strokes on the second day to land comfortably in fourth.

Dannenbring shot 75-69 for a two-day total of an even-par 144 strokes, good for fourth place individually. He slotted in behind only Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Max Krenik, who fired a 142 (72-70) for the top medalist honor, with O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney (75-68) and Harrisburg’s Riley Christensen (74-69) both at 143 strokes.

McCormick went 81-69 to come in eighth place with a total of 150 strokes. He and Dannenbring both posted rounds of 3-under 69 on Day 2, which were two of the seven total under-par rounds for the entire field across both days.

Everett Morrison and Dawson Adams rounded out the Kernels’ team scorecard both days. Morrison shot 154 (78-76) to come in 17th place, while Adams shot 167 (87-80) and landed inside the top 40 of the 61-person field that competed on both days. Also competing among Mitchell’s varsity top six were Matthew Mausckyzi (172) and Jordan Meyerink (180).

Mitchell is back in action Tuesday, Aug. 26, as the Kernels visit Hillsview Golf Club in the state capital for the Pierre Invite.
