Oleksandr Usyk returns to the UK to contest the undisputed heavyweight championship against Britain’s Daniel Dubois on Saturday night
Starting with his cruiserweight farewell, an eighth-round knockout of former WBC champion Tony Bellew in Manchester in November 2018, Usyk has feasted on the best British boxing has to offer.
Seven of his past eight opponents have been UK fighters and his perfect professional record, now 23-0, has remained intact. Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury were each outpointed over 12 rounds and then went back for a return dose and got the same outcome.
That’s the script that Dubois is trying to flip after being beaten into submission by Usyk in Worclaw, Poland in August 2023. The 27-year-old’s improvement since then has been astonishing, with banner wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and – most spectacularly at the same Wembley Stadium last September – Joshua.
Dubois will take the IBF belt into the ring, the sanctioning body having stripped Usyk for going into an immediate rematch with Fury last year. The Ukrainian master has the WBA, WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine belts.
