EDMONTON – Winning hockey games is hard.
The Edmonton Oilers should know; they have won 35 this season. However, with 21 games remaining on the schedule, they need to win a lot more if they plan on hoisting the Stanley Cup in June.

While it’s been reported that the Oilers are looking for an upgrade on the blueline, adding another capable goalie to push Stuart Skinner wouldn’t hurt.
That’s why the Oilers could be the perfect fit for New York Rangers goalie, Jonathan Quick. Here are three reasons the Oilers should make a deal happen for the veteran goalie.
The first thing that stands out about Quick is how inexpensive his contract is. The Rangers’ netminder is on an expiring deal worth $1.275 million. That’s about half of Skinner’s deal and a bit more than what Calvin Pickard is making.
Quick is also due a $25,000 bonus if he has a .915 save percentage (SV%) in 20 starts. He has started 16 games so far this year.

Quick is playing more than adequately for the Rangers this season. They also have a workhorse in their starting netminder, Igor Shesterkin.
The 39-year-old netminder has a 9-5-2 record, a 2.92 goals against average (GAA), a .903 SV%, and three shutouts in 20 games played.
Looking at fancier stats, Quick has a 2.0 goals saved above expected (GSAx). Among goalies who have played at least 20 games this year, Quick ranks 29th. For comparison, Skinner and Pickard rank 40th and 44th, respectively.
Quick has been a great goalie throughout his NHL career. Although his performance has waned recently, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t bring value to the Oilers’ goal.
The last time he played in the playoffs was against the Oilers. In that seven-game series, he posted a 3.43 GAA, a .904 SV%, and one shutout.
In 2017-18, he started all the Kings’ games. Despite getting swept, Quick had an incredible 1.55 GAA and a .947 SV%.
Quick has won the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy. His leadership would tremendously help the Oilers locker room, especially Skinner.
A player of his caliber pushing Skinner could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
