Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels is retiring from international football. The 34-year-old had, as reported by HLN, suggested this was in the works after missing out on the World Cup squad this summer. With Thibaut Courtois now fully back in the fold, its clear that Sels is no longer considered a regular for the Belgian national team. As a result, the Nottingham Forest first choice goalkeeper has decided to formally end his international career.
Sels was certainly one of those unlucky to be around at the same time as Real Madrid’s Courtois. In another era, Sels may well have gained far more than the 13 caps he has amassed for the Belgian national team since 2015. He had even made three of his appearances during the World Cup Qualification campaign for Belgium, so it was always going to be hard for him to accept not being part of the final squad. With a number of young goalkeepers also now coming through, such as Senne Lammens at Manchester United and Mike Penders at Chelsea, it is clear that once Courtois leaves there will be another player ready to take his place over Sels.

The former Gent goalkeeper joined Nottingham Forest from Strasbourg in the winter transfer window 2023/2024 season and has gone on to become the sides first choice goalkeeper, with over 100 appearances for the side.
