Nick Bosa readily admits he does not know much about Australia.

But the 49ers star has at least one priority figured out.

“I heard they have good coffee so I’ll try and take advantage of that and have some good coffee,” Bosa said before San Francisco departed for Melbourne. “I think there’s some nature exhibits to check out maybe.”

Bosa, who returned to practice this week as he works back from a torn ACL, should have plenty of opportunities for both before the 49ers face the Rams in the NFL’s historic Australia opener.

He is right about the black gold.

Melbourne takes its coffee seriously. The city imports roughly 30 tons of coffee beans per day — enough for about 3 million cups — according to Visit Melbourne. It even claims its own creation, the “Magic,” a double ristretto topped with steamed milk in a five-ounce cup.

The 49ers are leaning into that culture themselves, partnering with six Melbourne businesses on a game-week “Foodie Passport” that includes player-inspired coffee.

If Bosa wants the wildlife experience, Healesville Sanctuary offers a decidedly Australian introduction with native animals in a bushland setting, including koalas, kangaroos and wombats.

There is also another sport awaiting him.

Melbourne is in the middle of the AFL playoffs, and Geelong and Carlton will play an elimination final Friday night at the same Melbourne Cricket Ground where the 49ers and Rams will make NFL history days later.

That would provide Bosa a crash course in “footy” and the 100,000-seat stadium he is about to call home for one afternoon.

First, though, he may want that coffee.

After a transpacific flight and a massive time-zone adjustment, the Magic might be less of a tourist recommendation and more of a necessity.
