Jude McAtamney will start for the New York Giants in their NFL game against the Los Angeles Chargers at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday after being activated from the practice squad.

Veteran regular placekicker Graham Gano is injured for the game.

McAtamney missed out on the 53-man active roster with the Giants after being waived at the start of the season.

The former Derry gaelic footballer handled all kicking duties in pre-season victories over the New York Jets and New England Patriots, kicking 10 extra points and a field goal between both games, while playing in the second half of the pre-season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Last season, McAtamney was called from the practice squad into the Giants team for the regular season game against the Washington Commanders when Gano sustained an injury.

McAtamney, from Swatragh, kicked two points in his side’s 27-22 defeat in front of 80,000 spectators.

He became the first Irish-born placekicker to feature in a regular NFL game since 1985.

The 25-year-old played at college level for the Chowan Hawks and Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
