Daytona Motor Mouths: Taylor Swift knows NASCAR winner Josh Berry
The guys introduce Josh Berry after his Vegas win, look at the standings and preview the Homestead-Miami race. Plus, a Richard Petty show-and-tell?
What to make of Homestead, huh?
It’s become NASCAR’s vagabond race venue, and that’s a damn shame because in the young Next Gen era, Homestead-Miami Speedway has established itself as the raciest of race tracks — opinions may vary, but not much.
When Homestead first got a Cup Series date, in 1999, it was anchored at the very end of the schedule, and it was a nice, warm-weather way to end the season — and as a bonus, NASCAR got that big and hot Miami market. It remained there in 2004 when the first Cup playoffs debuted and continued as the season finale through 2019.
Since 2020: a bit of whiplash. Homestead’s race ran in June during the 2020 season, when the schedule was rather fluid due to the pandemic, then planted in late February the following year.
Then came three straight October playoff dates through last season, and now this unfortunate move to March and Week 6.
What will the future hold? Who knows. There’s talk of alternating the championship race among a few warm-weather locales in future years, and if that happens, Homestead would surely be included in that mix.
Watch the action this weekend and you’ll see why it definitely should be.
