Saturday night’s Nu Way 225 Powered by Bobcat and Sauced by Blues Hog at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, delivered plenty of drama before it was even halfway done, with a massive pit lane pileup at the end of Stage 1 forcing NASCAR to red-flag the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race and setting the tone for a chaotic night of Playoff racing on The CW.

Pit Lane Crash Brings Out Red Flag

The most alarming moment of the night came at the conclusion of the opening stage, when a chain-reaction crash unfolded on pit lane as the field cycled in for service. The incident appeared to begin when Joe Gibbs Racing driver William Sawalich slowed to enter his pit box. Still, not everyone behind him reacted at the same rate, triggering a massive pileup that sent cars spinning toward crew members who had already taken their positions on pit lane.

Two crew members for fellow Joe Gibbs Racing driver Brent Crews were struck by the spinning car of Peterson Racing’s Nick Sanchez. Both limped away from the incident and later told The CW’s pit road reporter they were okay. The crash ultimately collected nearly a dozen drivers, many of whom were competing in the second race of the series’ Chase for the championship. NASCAR was forced to red flag the race to clear the gridlock of cars stacked up on pit lane.

“This is one of the worst-case scenarios as a crew member. I hope that nobody was out there when they stacked up,” media and pit crew analyst Bozi Tatarevic wrote on X.
