NASCAR has won some new fans with its innovative Chicago Street Race, but to Kevin Harvick’s chagrin, not everyone is on board.

For the third straight year, NASCAR returned to Chicago for a new tradition. While the concept has garnered some support, a local columnist urged Chicago to sever ties with NASCAR.

On Sunday evening, the Chicago Sun-Timespublished a piece from Steve Greenberg titled, “Dear NASCAR: End of the road in Chicago can’t come fast enough.” Greenberg used Chicago Street Race president Julie Giese calling the event a “love letter” to the city to argue that Chicago should write a break-up letter in return.

Harvick didn’t appreciate the recommendation. The former Cup Series champion blasted Greenberg on his Happy Hour podcast.

“You’ve got some of these slapsticks like this guy from the Sun-Times, this Steve Greenberg guy that wrote the crappy story this morning,” Harvick said. “But for the most part, people who actually want to pay attention and be part of the event do the things that aren’t just looking for a headline because they write bad stories.”

Harvick called the Chicago Street Race “one of the best events that NASCAR has ever decided to do.” Unlike Greenberg, he’s eager to keep it going beyond 2025.

“We went street racing, and it’s entertaining to watch,” Harvick added. “Everybody that was at my house yesterday wanted to watch the race because of what it was. It’s exciting. The cars are in close quarters. You make a mistake, as we saw during this race, you pay for it. And it creates different things that you can’t see on a naturally built road course or a race course.

“I think it’s one of the greatest events that they’ve created lately, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.”

Greenberg evoked Harvick in his column, saying the 2007 Daytona 500 winner “promised us a couple of years ago that things between us would work out beautifully” when NASCAR began the Chicago Street Race.

“‘Once we get you out there in person, we won’t lose you,’ he said,” Greenberg quoted Harvick telling fans. “Did you ever really even have us, though? We wonder.”
