YAKIMA – Moses Lake Mavs boys golf team took first place in Monday’s tournament at Appletree Golf Course in Yakima.

“That Appletree’s a tough course,” said Mavs coach Terry Melbye. “There’s a lot of trees and hills in there and there is a ton of water everywhere on that course.”

Mason Bradford of the Mavs shot for par on the day despite the conditions, with the team overall beating the competition by at least 11 strokes, said Melbye.

“Things went well; it was awfully windy out there,” said Melbye. “I think it was 14 miles an hour with gusts up to 21.”

Getting to play a tough course was a good experience for the young golfers as they got to experience a course outside of their usual environment, said Melbye.

“It was a good match; it was a windy day, and I think they had a great time,” said Melbye.

The Mavs are looking especially competitive this year as the JV squad has also been able to come up strong and is looking to get their chance on getting to play Varsity next year, said Melbye.

“The team is looking real good and it’s pretty competitive with the Varsity matches there,” said Melbye. “We have some JV golfers that are really putting the pressure on varsity to take their spots, which is kind of nice, so the Varsity golfers feel the pressure.”

The Mavs will look to take their competitive spirit to Quincy on Thursday at 3 p.m. and will play at the Moses Lake Golf Club on March 31.
