Mitsuoka should be right up your alley if you like profoundly weird mashups. The retro-flavored cars designed by the coachbuilder are an acquired taste and you’ll commonly find its models in lists with the ugliest vehicles ever made. Remember the strange Orochi? The company is approaching its 60th anniversary, so clearly, there’s demand for its contraptions to keep the lights open for so many decades. Case in point, the intriguing M55 is back.
Due to popular demand, the peculiar limited-run special edition based on a Honda Civic has returned. The original M55 Zero Edition sold out within 10 days, so Mitsuoka is doing a follow-up 1st Edition with more customization options. While its predecessor was restricted to a single color and trim level, the 1970s-inspired oddity now comes in 10 different finishes and three grades. It’s available in gasoline and hybrid flavors, with a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.

Mitsuoka typically draws inspiration from European and American cars, but the M55 takes after a domestic product. It’s actually a tribute to the fourth-generation Skyline (C110), although we initially (and wrongfully) saw 1970s Dodge Challenger traits sprinkled with Lancia cues. Either way, a quick look at the profile betrays the car’s true identity: it’s a Civic, alright. Even if you don’t like the car’s looks, we must admire the designers for their creativity. Bonus points for the rear louvers.
As with other cars, Mitsuoka had to tread a fine line to avoid being sued for copyright infringement, especially for the grille design. The car’s name is a nod to the company’s 55th anniversary, which was celebrated in 2023. While the Zero Edition was limited to 100 units, the 1st Edition will be assembled in 250 examples. Prices start at 7,568,000 yen ($50,000) and rise to 8,427,100 yen ($56,000). Mitsuoka already accepts orders and will build and deliver the cars in 2026.

Since Honda no longer makes a Civic Coupe, the M55 is based on the five-door hatchback with its sloping roofline. But let’s keep in mind that the Prelude is returning, and we feel the Japanese coachbuilder is eager to transform it radically. We’re here for it.
