HARRISBURG, S.D. — A strong showing across the entire Mitchell High School girls golf team proved to be the winning formula in the team’s season-opening meet on Thursday.
The Kernels edged Eastern South Dakota Conference rival Aberdeen Central by one stroke to secure the team championship at the Harrisburg Invitational at Spring Creek Country Club. Mitchell posted a cumulative score of 315 while the Golden Eagles finished at 316.

The team title was decided on Mitchell’s final hole of the day, with Londyn Hajek needing to score better than a triple bogey on the par-5 No. 16 hole. She closed out her round with a double bogey to finish with an 82, finishing in 12th place and securing the team championship.
Other Kernel performances include Mia Larson’s round of 81 to finish in 10th. Ava Eliason fired an 83 to secure a 13th-place finish and Presley Meyerink came home with a score of 107. In all, 81 golfers participated in the tournament, representing 14 schools.
Aberdeen’s Olivia Braun was the only golfer to break par around the par-71 layout at Spring Creek, securing the individual championship with a 3-under-68, finishing with six birdies. Pierre’s Hadley Hart came in third place behind Childs after shooting a 4-over-75. Sioux Fall O’Gorman’s Erin Hurd (76) and Braun’s teammate Emma Dohrer (78) completed the top-five.

At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
