Two of the top senior men golfers in the state went head-to-head at the 41st Wisconsin State Senior Open on the Player Course at Destination Geneva National in Lake Geneva on Sept. 3, with Michael Crowley besting David Roesch by a single shot to win the championship.
It was Crowley’s second Senior Open title. He also won in 2020.
Roesch, a Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer, is still searching for his first title. He won the Wisconsin Senior PGA Professional Championship in July.
Crowley began the final round of the 36-hole tournament four shots behind Roesch but fired a 4-under 68 as Roesch went 1-over to flip the top of the scoreboard. Roesch was undone on his front nine, shooting 3-over. He got two shots back on his final nine but couldn’t secure a third birdie to force a playoff.
Crowley made two bogeys on his front nine but also made three birdies and he was able to make three more birdies on the back nine.
Ryan Helminen, Jim A. Walkley and Jim Schuman all tied for third at 6-under, with Schuman carding a 6-under 66 for the round of the day.
Mick Smith finished sixth at 3-under while Thomas Halla and Derek Stendahl tied for seventh at 2-under. They were the last players to finish under par for the tournament.
The top 10 was rounded out by John Fitzgibbon and Kurt Mantyla, who tied for ninth at even par.
