MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks Girls Golf team finished fourth overall Tuesday afternoon in their league tournament at Moses Lake Golf and Country Club.
“All in all, I thought the girls did pretty good and I’m real proud of them,” said Mavs girls golf coach Kevin Whittall.
Mavs’ number one golfer Lilianna Roylance shot 100 on the day which is about average for her, number two Ally Hindman set a new personal record shooting 106 and shaving about 10 strokes off what she usually gets, Amberly Vazquez shot 139 and Ella Palmer shot a new personal record of 129 lowering her score by about five to seven strokes. The tournament ended with Eastmont taking first, West Valley second, Wenatchee third, Mavs fourth, Eisenhower fifth and Sunnyside sixth.
The Mavs had also played in another course the day prior, making the girls play a total of 36 holes in two days. Whittall said he was proud to see that despite the girls’ exhaustion, they still pushed through to play through a whole other course.
Whittall said their match at Appletree Golf Course next week will be their final league match before going to districts. The team will be focusing on using the rest of this week to go out on the course to go over more putts and chip-ins.
“That’s kind of where your score is on the putting green and from 100 yards in,” said Whittall. “It’s toward the end of the season so the girls know what they need to work on, and they’ll put in the effort and hopefully next week drop the scores even more.”
The coach said the girls have been making great headway and since most of them are sophomores and juniors, they’ll have the chance to continue to improve with the school. For the remainder of this season, he wants the girls to finish out strong and hopes to potentially see some girls sneak into the state tournament this year.
“I’m excited for our girls golf program,” he said. “I think we’re going to finish strong, and I look forward to coaching these girls.”
The Mavs will play at Appletree Golf Course on Monday at 11 a.m.
