Matt Fitzpatrick has arguably been the best player on the PGA Tour so far this season.

Fitzpatrick has two wins to his name and a runner-up finish in nine starts on the PGA Tour in 2026.

He has made all nine cuts and has recorded seven top-25 finishes. It is little wonder that the Englishman has risen to a career-high third in the world rankings.

Matt Fitzpatrick has made huge strides so far this year, with his improved approach play proving to be a big difference-maker for him on the PGA Tour.

Fitzpatrick’s transformation has been ‘unbelievable’ by his own admission.

And his already exceptional 2026 season hit new heights with his playoff victory over Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage on Sunday.

Next up for the 32-year-old is the Zurich Classic of New Orleans this week, where he will team up with his brother, Alex Fitzpatrick.

The change that Matt Fitzpatrick wants the PGA Tour to make

The four-time PGA Tour winner spoke to Trey Wingo on his Straight Facts Homie Podcast on Wednesday.

Fitzpatrick responded when asked how much he is looking forward to playing in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans this week alongside his brother, Alex.

Yeah, it’s really nice, he said.

You know, it’s nice, I think, to have something different.

I think, obviously, we play so much individual golf, to have a team event that’s got a different format is always more enjoyable.

You know, I feel like the Tour needs more of this, whether it’s in season or out of season.

I think it would, you know, draw more attention, you’ll get a few more different golf courses, different fields, you know, I think it’s enjoyable.

As golfers, you want to keep the game as enjoyable as possible, because it can weigh you down when things aren’t going great.

So to have a change of pace is always really nice.

The numbers don’t support Matt Fitzpatrick’s PGA Tour demand

Fitzpatrick may want more team events but the demand simply isn’t there for it, unfortunately.

In 2025, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was the fifth least watched event out of the entire PGA Tour schedule.

The team event at TPC Louisiana in Avondale attracted 1,631,000 viewers last year. Compare that to the 4,362,000 viewers who watched the RBC Heritage or the 2,918,000 who tuned in for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

The only tournaments which had lower viewing figures than the Zurich Classic were the two Hawaii events and west coast stops – the Farmers Insurance Open and the American Express.

Matt Fitzpatrick may want more team events on the PGA Tour but it just doesn’t seem like that will be a feasible option moving forward.
