Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest 2-nil at Wembley yesterday to book their place in this season’s FA Cup final. They will take on Crystal Palace in the final on May 17. Pep Guardiola’s side had to fight their way to victory after a dominant first-half display. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side gave it their all in the second half but they were denied three times by the woodwork as City came away with a 2-nil victory.
With their victory, Manchester City has now made three consecutive FA Cup finals. That is a remarkable achievement in itself. It may not get the recognition it deserves given how Manchester City’s season has panned out. But to consistently get to the final shows the level of drive and determination that remains in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Manchester City’s ageing stars may not be able to play at the level they once could but they have a drive and insatiable will to win that carried them to victory yesterday.
Speaking after his team’s win Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City’s win yesterday was a testament to the consistency of his players. He told the media post-game: “Seven semi-finals in a row, three finals speaks so highly about this generation of players and this club in itself. We are really pleased that we are there. This season has not been good because what defines it is the Premier League.”
Manchester City will face Crystal Palace next month in the FA Cup final. If they can beat Palace it would be a fitting victory for a generation of players that have given the club so much success. But to make three consecutive FA Cup finals is an outstanding achievement. Now attention shifts back to the Premier League and City’s bid to secure Champions League football.
