Luke Balaskiewicz of Jacksonville, playing in his final junior tournament, shot 4-under-par 67 on July 29 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex Ackerman-Allen Course in West Lafayatte, Ind., and is three shots off the lead in the first round of the Junior PGA Championship. 

Balaskiewicz, a Bolles graduate who will enter the University of North Florida next month, began his round at the 10th hole, made six pars in a row, then dipped into red figures with birdies at Nos. 16 and 18. He recovered from a bogey at the first to birdie Nos. 2, 6 and 7. 

Balaskiewicz is coming off a runner-up finish at the Jacksonville Amateur. 

Chase Yenser of Douglasville, Pa., who is coming off a victory in the Pennsylvania Junior, shot 7-under 64 to take the first-round lead. Yenser had a bogey-free round and made four of five birdies during one stretch. Balaskiewicz is tied for sixth.

Tyler Mawhinney chops up par-5 holes

Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island birdied all three par-5 holes on the Pete Dye-designed course and posted a 69 to tie for 31st.. Playing partner Charlie Woods, the son of two-time Players champion and 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, birdied three of his last six holes and shot 1-under 70 to tie for 45th.

Samuel Ha of St. Augustine shot 76. 

In the girls division, Sahana Chokshi of Jacksonville had three birdies and posted an even-par 72 at the Kampen-Cosler Course. She’s tied for 33rd, seven shots behind leader Taylor Snively of Zionsville, Ind.

When do the area players tee off in the second round? 

Mawhinney, who is the same group with Woods, will tee off in the second round at the first hole, at 7:41 a.m. 

Balaskiewicz also starts at No. 1, at 2:35 p.m. 

Ha begins at the 10th hole at 7:57 a.m. and Chokshi tees off No. 1 at 12:45 p.m. 

The cut will be made in each division to the low 60 players, plus ties, after the second round. There will be a 54-hole cut to the low 30, plus ties.
