Alessandro Bastoni Transfer Race: Liverpool and Barcelona Monitoring Inter Defender

Interest in Inter Milan centre back Alessandro Bastoni is beginning to gather pace ahead of the summer transfer window. Reports from Spain suggest Liverpool and Barcelona are both closely tracking the Italian international, with Inter prepared to listen to offers for one of their most influential defenders.

Credit for the original reporting goes to Diario Sport, who outline how the Nerazzurri could be open to negotiations if the right offer arrives. Bastoni has established himself as one of Europe’s leading left sided centre backs, admired for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence and ability to build play from the back.

With several major clubs evaluating their defensive options, Bastoni’s name appears increasingly likely to dominate transfer discussions in the coming months.

Barcelona and Liverpool tracking Bastoni situation

According to Diario Sport, both clubs have taken steps to position themselves for a potential move.

Reports from Spain claim that both Liverpool and Barcelona are positioning themselves at the front of the queue for Alessandro Bastoni as Inter Milan quietly open the door to a potential summer sale of their defensive leader. The Italy international has long been regarded as one of the most complete left-sided centre-backs in Europe.

The Catalan club are believed to be particularly keen to strengthen the balance of their back line.

Diario Sport report that both Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco view the Inter defender as an ideal pillar for their next defensive cycle, especially with the Catalans keen to add a high-level left-footer to complement their emerging talents. It’s claimed that Catalan outfit have already done their homework on Bastoni’s camp and understand both his contractual situation and Inter’s stance.

The report also claims that Bastoni currently would prefer a move to Barcelona over Liverpool.

Liverpool long term planning in defence

Liverpool’s interest appears linked to succession planning at the heart of defence.

Liverpool, meanwhile, see Bastoni as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch captain remains a dominant presence at Anfield, yet the club’s recruitment department continue to assess future options. Bastoni’s profile as a ball playing centre back naturally fits the style Liverpool have developed in recent seasons.

His calm distribution and positional awareness would suit a side that frequently builds attacks from deep areas.

Inter Milan valuation sets transfer tone

Any deal will depend heavily on Inter’s financial expectations.

According to the report, Inter have now put a clear number on Bastoni’s head, with the Nerazzurri prepared to listen to offers starting at around £60m, a figure communicated to Barcelona and known to other interested clubs like Liverpool.

Barcelona, however, face financial limitations.

Internally, Barcelona considers that price steep given their Financial Fair Play constraints and are already exploring formulas such as staggered payments or including players to reduce the upfront cost.

Inter’s willingness to talk does not mean Bastoni will be pushed out of San Siro, but it does mark a significant change: their defensive cornerstone is no longer completely untouchable, as long as someone arrives with that £60m starting bid.

Bastoni preference could shape outcome

Player preference could ultimately influence the direction of any move.

With the player understood to be open to a new challenge if the right project arrives, it could be one to watch heading into the summer transfer window.

Significantly though, it’s suggested that the Italian international prefers a move to Barcelona over Anfield should a summer switch materialise.

Ultimately, whether Liverpool decide to test Inter’s resolve could come down to Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation, which is still up in the air.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the coming months may determine whether Bastoni becomes a genuine transfer target or remains an admired option monitored from distance.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report is frustrating reading. Bastoni is exactly the type of defender Liverpool should be targeting if the club are serious about rebuilding the back line for the next era. A left sided centre back who is elite on the ball, tactically sharp and entering his peak years would fit perfectly into the squad.

Yet the suggestion that Bastoni would prefer Barcelona highlights a broader issue around Liverpool’s current standing. Despite Arne Slot delivering the Premier League title in his first season, the club now sits sixth after a summer where around £450m was spent. For supporters, that makes recruitment decisions even more critical.

Virgil van Dijk cannot anchor the defence forever. Liverpool need a clear succession plan and Bastoni looks like one of the few defenders capable of filling that void. Waiting to see what happens with Ibrahima Konate’s contract before making a move feels reactive rather than proactive.

There is also the financial question. A fee around £60m for a player of Bastoni’s quality would not be unreasonable in today’s market, particularly considering Liverpool’s spending last summer.

If the club truly wants to remain competitive at the top level, moves for players of this calibre need to be decisive. Watching Barcelona win that race, especially given their financial limitations, would leave many Liverpool supporters questioning the club’s ambition once again.
