Texas Tech golf coach JoJo Robertson on Klara Hurtova, NCAA regional
The Rawls Course at Texas Tech is host of the NCAA Lubbock Regional. The Red Raiders didn’t qualify as a team, but had a player make it.
Carolina Chacarra shot a tournament-best 7-under-par and two teammates joined her in the top 10, leading the Wake Forest women’s golf team to the championship of the NCAA Lubbock Regional that wrapped up May 6 at the Rawls Course.
Chacarra shot rounds of 69, 71 and 69 over three days, winning regional medalist by three strokes over Texas’ Farah O’Keefe (70-72-70). Wake Forest’s Chloe Kovelesky (71-73-70) was third.
Texas Tech sophomore Klara Hurtova made two birdies in a round of 81 and finished 31-over. Hurtova started on hole No. 10 and made both her birdies around the turn at the par-5 No. 18 and the par-4 No. 1. She had seven bogeys and two double bogeys.
The NCAA championships final site competition is May 16-21 in Carlsbad, California, at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. Joining Wake Forest there will be Texas, Iowa State, Tennessee and Purdue, which won a playoff with Texas A&M for the final advancing spot.
Wake Forest finished 2-under, Texas 2-over, Iowa State 10-over, Tennessee 22-over and Texas A&M and Purdue 25-over. Then came UC Davis at 26-over and Arizona at 28-over.
Texas A&M’s Vanessa Borovilos made a 4-foot putt on No. 18 coming out of a lightning delay to force the playoff. In the one-hole playoff involving all five players from each lineup, Purdue players were 2-under and A&M players were even par.
In addition to the top five teams advancing to the final site, so does the lowest-scoring individual not on an advancing team. Florida Gulf Coast’s Lousiane Gauthier (69-76-71) claimed that spot, finishing fourth at even par.
There was a three-way tie for fifth at 1-over among Texas’ Cindy Hsu (70-76-71), Purdue’s Momo Sugiyama (76-72-69) and Tennessee’s Martina Lopez Manchares (73-78-66).
