Lexus recently signaled the beginning of the end for the LS with a Heritage Edition honoring the car that essentially launched Toyota’s luxury brand. But much has changed in the 36 years since the original LS debuted. In 2025, some buyers would rather drive, or be chauffeured, in a minivan.

This dramatic shift in customer preferences is reflected in Lexus’ decision to introduce the LM (Luxury Mover) as a high-end version of the Alphard. But that’s not all. The LS itself is now getting the minivan treatment, at least in concept form. Formerly known as the Tokyo Motor Show, the Japan Mobility Show will host this surprise debut: an LS-based minivan with six wheels.

Shadowy images surfaced during a 90-minute livestream we watched closely, hoping to catch a glimpse of the new LFR. Despite numerous teasers, the supercar was notably absent. Instead, we were genuinely taken aback when an official video previewed a six-wheeled LS minivan concept.

With the Japan Mobility Show not opening until October 29, these teasers will have to do for now. It appears the concept may have an asymmetrical door layout, as there doesn’t seem to be room for a conventional front door on the passenger side. Instead, a large electric sliding door dominates the profile, offering access to what looks like a cavernous interior.

Lexus hasn’t shared any details, but it’s reasonable to assume the LS concept is fully electric. That would make sense, as EVs allow better packaging to maximize cabin space. The boxy, tall silhouette with its flat roofline reinforces the impression of a high-end living room on wheels.

As if the glowing six-wheel setup weren’t wild enough, the LS concept also seems to have a bold lighting design. Vertical LED daytime running lights stretch the full height of the front fascia, while the taillight strip extends upward to emphasize the vehicle’s considerable height.

Aside from trucks and SUVs like the AMG G63 6×6, there are a handful of cars with three axles. The Hispano Suiza H6 had six wheels more than a century ago. The Covini C6W did things differently by having four front wheels, much like the Tyrrell P34 in Formula 1. But realistically, we can’t imagine Lexus selling this wacky LS as-is.

After all, it’s a concept car. A third axle is a sure way to grab attention, as if using the storied LS name for such an unconventional vehicle weren’t already controversial. While purists may scoff at the idea of an LS minivan, others will likely find Lexus’ experimental direction for its flagship intriguing. Either way, it’s a bold move.

The Lexus LS concept will share the spotlight at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show with a lavish Century coupe and possibly a Corolla oncept.
