I still believe the Los Angeles Rams bettered their roster when they selected Ty Simpson with the 13th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Recently, on Bussin’ with the Boys, McVay confirmed that he too thinks (and no surprise) Simpson boosts their quarterback room now and later. As great as the Simpson pick could be, it’s hard to argue that taking a player like Makai Lemon likely would’ve helped the Rams more in 2026 than Simpson.

That’s the one part of McVay’s logic that I don’t quite follow. McVay has talked about not being able to guarantee a Super Bowl by taking a player like Lemon, however, wouldn’t taking Lemon give the Rams a better chance to win a Super Bowl in 2026 than Simpson does?

Here’s McVay’s on not being able to guarantee a Super Bowl with one specific pick:

“But with that being said, was it an easy decision? No. Because how are we always balancing? If you told me that we could ensure that if we took a player at 13, like if we took Makai Lemon, Kenyon Sadiq, players that we had a lot of appreciation for, Rueben Bain’s still on the board at the time, if drafting them would’ve ensured that we’re going to show at SoFi Stadium next year (for the Super Bowl), I’d say sign me up. We’re taking that guy.”

I get it, no player taken in a draft can assure a Super Bowl, but some will help more than others, and as it stands, it’s hard to argue that Lemon or basically ANY other player taken at 13 other than Simpson, would’ve helped the Rams more in 2026.

If Matthew Stafford misses time and Simpson fills in and wins some games, then the Simpson pick will look like a brilliant move. But as it stands, Simpson doesn’t look like he’ll help the Rams as much as several other prospects could have right now.

Does it matter? We should have a better idea after this campaign, but it’s fair to question the taking of Simpson when so much other talent was there for the Rams to consider.

For what it’s worth, I like the Simpson pick. If someone doesn’t, and for example thinks the Rams should’ve taken Lemon over Simpson, I think that take can be fair too.

We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out, for now, file this one away under “T” for “To be determined” in the Los Angeles Rams zone.
