Kyle Larson has been with Hendrick Motorsports since the 2021 NASCAR season and will be for much longer. Larson signed a contract extension that will keep him in the No. 5 car at Hendrick Motorsports through the 2031 NASCAR campaign. However, will this be the two-time Cup Series champion’s final contract?
Larson spoke to Motorsport.com and provided an update on a potential retirement timeline from NASCAR. If Larson sticks to his word, don’t expect a retirement anytime soon.

“I started saying this last year, but 40 is my next milestone,” Larson told Motorsport.com. “I want to get there and then evaluate if I want to keep going or be done. It all depends on where my kids are in their lives and interests. As far as competing for a Sprint Car championship, I would say right now in 2026, that I have changed my mind on that. I feel like I have accomplished a lot since I made those comments.”
If Larson races until he is 40 years old, it will keep him in NASCAR through the 2032 NASCAR season. This means the driver of the No. 5 car would enter a second contract and likely take it year-by-year. While Larson’s past comments suggest an early retirement like Alex Bowman, that doesn’t appear to be the case now.
