Jon Rahm was hoping to turn the tide of his tough year outside of LIV Golf this week at the BMW PGA Championship, but the struggles continued in a big way.
Jon Rahm was one of the biggest names going into the BMW PGA Championship this week, but when he left Wentworth on Thursday, he signed a scorecard that was better than just one player. Not exactly the showing he was hoping for.

The Spaniard started his day with a bogey at the first, added two more on Nos. 3 and 6, then doubled the eighth before making the turn with a 5-over 40. He traded a bogey on 11 with a birdie at 12, then bogeyed the 15th to finish off an opening-round 6-over 78. He tied five other players at that mark, and beat just Marcel Siem, who was one worse at 79.

His performance was even more surprising given his recent finishes at the BMW PGA, as he finished fourth or better three times in his last three appearances.
Unsurprisingly, he didn’t speak with the media after his round—to be fair, not many players would’ve.
His poor performance on Day 1 in Surrey is a continuation of what we’ve seen from him all year. Despite two wins and five runner-up finishes on LIV Golf, Rahm’s only top-20 finish outside of his home circuit was a tie for second at the PGA Championship: T-38 (Masters), MC (U.S. Open), T-36 (Genesis Scottish Open), T-46 (The Open), and a tie for 23rd at last week’s Irish Open. He’s now the 14th-ranked player in the world.
Instead of contending for a title at one of the biggest events on the DP World Tour, Rahm will now be fighting just to make it to the weekend.
