During a conversation with Mahershala Ali for The Hollywood Reporter, Brown described playing golf for the first time at Maxey’s event. His lack of experience immediately placed him behind teammates who knew their way around the course.

“Inside, it was hurting me to know that these guys were better than me,” Brown said. “You know what I mean?”

The outing carried a relaxed purpose. Brown’s teammates told him they were enjoying themselves and developing chemistry. Brown understood that, but it did nothing to calm his frustration.

“It was eating me alive,” Brown said.

His response was not to accept that golf simply fell outside his skill set. Brown immediately began considering how he could close the gap without alerting the players who had outperformed him.

“Man, I’m about to go hire a golf instructor,” Brown said. “I’m about to go grind for two months straight, come back, act like I didn’t do that at all.”

Play Rewind

Ali laughed at Brown’s proposed operation, which perfectly captured the mentality behind it. Brown admitted that many pursuits come naturally to him, but struggling with a new activity only pushes him toward private preparation.

His plan involves putting in the work away from attention, returning with a dramatically improved game, and pretending the development happened naturally.

Maxey’s golf gathering may have focused on team bonding, but Brown left with another competition. His next opponent just happens to be the golf course.
