Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis get the chance to write a fresh chapter at one of the United States’ most cherished boxing venues on Saturday night.
IBF welterweight king Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) has long been tipped as boxing’s next American superstar. In WBA champion and 2016 Olympian Stanionis (15-9, 9 KOs) he has the dance partner to either help make that a reality or bring those dreams crashing down at Atlantic City’s hallowed Boardwalk Hall.
The Ring Magazine title is also on the line for this clash between the consensus No. 1 and No. 2 in the 147-pound division.
“I’m ready to put on a show and show the world why I’m the best, and come Saturday night, I’m going to take home all these belts,” Ennis told the pre-fight press conference.
“We expect him to do what he usually does. Come forward, throw a lot of jabs, punches and try to hook; a typical pressure fighter. I don’t think he can do much else other than that.”

That was perhaps damning Stanionis with faint praise, what passed for trash talk in a well-mannered and respectful build-up between two easily likeable combatants.
But Ennis did list a few notable qualities before “much else”, and if Stanionis can establish his excellent jab to set up relentless, swarming attacks we could be in for a thriller thanks to a classic stylist vs. pressure fighter matchup.
The Boardwalk Hall has seen a few of those down the years, with Ennis namechecking Floyd Mayweather’s ultimately one-sided beatdown of fan favourite Arturo Gatti in 2005. If he can do something similar to the accomplished and well-schooled Stanionis, then he’ll be heading for the stratosphere.
The Sporting News will update live results from the Ennis vs. Stanionis main card and provide a full report on the main event.
