It’s time for the championship match of the 2025 U.S. Amateur.

Teenagers Jackson Herrington, a 19-year-old sophomore at Tennessee, and Mason Howell, an 18-year-old high school senior who’s committed to Georgia, both captured victories Saturday in thrilling semifinals. Herrington birdied the 18th hole to advance while Howell got hot on the back nine to win, 3 and 2.

Now, one of them will hoist the Havemeyer Trophy come Sunday night at Olympic Club.

U.S. Amateur format

Every player in the field will compete in 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, where the field will be cut to the low 64 players for match play, which begins Wednesday. A playoff will be used if needed to determine the 64 players. Then, the Round of 64 takes place Wednesday, Rounds of 32 and 16 on Thursday, quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the 36-hole championship final on Sunday.

What the winner of U.S. Amateur receives

  • A gold medal
  • Custody of the Havemeyer Trophy for one year
  • Exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs
  • Exemption into 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Country Club, in Southampton, N.Y.
  • Exemption into 2026 Open Championship, conducted by The R&A, at Royal Birkdale (must be an amateur)
  • Likely invitation into 2026 Masters Tournament (must be an amateur)
  • Name engraved into 2025 USGA Champions’ plaque that resides in the USGA Museum’s Hall of Champions in Liberty Corner, N.J.
