Ipswich Town have signed West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer.
The 28-year-old had a medical at Portman Road before the transfer deadline and will leave The Hawthorns having come through the club’s academy.
The total amount Ipswich are paying is reportedly up to £5m.
“I’m looking forward to a new challenge,” said Palmer. “Ipswich is a club that’s going places and everything I’ve heard about the manager [Kieran McKenna] has been nothing but positive.
“Coming here and being part of the group that has achieved a lot of things in a short space of time excites me. I’ve had a great time at West Brom and I wish them all the best.”
Palmer has made 104 appearances for West Brom, who are sixth in the Championship, with them opting to sell him as they believe they have a strong succession plan in Josh Griffiths, Joe Wildsmith and England Under-19s keeper Ben Cisse.
Ipswich have no plans on moving other goalkeepers out, with Palmer coming in as Christian Walton is sidelined for a number of weeks with a groin injury.
Palmer’s arrival gives McKenna another goalkeeping option after Arijanet Muric has made a number of costly errors this season, being at fault for both goals conceded on Saturday when Ipswich lost 2-1 at home to bottom side Southampton.
Town won successive promotions to move from League One to the Premier League, but are currently 19th in the top flight, three points adrift of safety.
Ipswich have also completed the signing of 18-year-old Chelsea left-back Somto Boniface. He has represented England at under-18s level but did not make a senior appearance for the Blues after coming through the club’s academy.
