The United States and Europe will renew one of golf’s fiercest rivalries when the 2026 Solheim Cup gets underway at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands this week.
The three-day match-play competition, which marks the 20th playing of the event, features 12-player teams representing the U.S. and Europe. While the Americans own an 11-7-1 edge in the all-time series, the Europeans have steadily closed the gap in recent years.

Solheim Cup formats explained
Foursomes, also known as alternate shot, is a format where each side sends out two-player teams using one golf ball and thus, record one score per hole. In all, eight players per side will compete in the foursomes with four players per side sitting out that session.
Four-balls is also known as best ball or better ball and in this format, each side sends out two-player teams for each match and all four players play their own ball but each team records only one score, the lowest per team. As in foursomes, eight players will compete per side with four players per side sitting out that session.

Sunday singles is self-explanatory as each side sends out all 12 players in 1-on-1 matches with each match victory counting as one point towards the team score.
How many points are needed to win the Solheim Cup?
There are 28 points across 28 matches and to win the cup, a team needs 14½. For the defending champion, 14 points is enough to retain the Cup. In 2026, the U.S. is the defending champion and would retain the Cup in the event the score ends in a 14-14 tie. That is what happened in Europe’s favor when the two sides tied in Spain.
The U.S. leads the all-time series, 11-7-1.
