If you want to get better at anything, it’s all about reps. I’ve spent hours on the driving range, and my golf handicap came down as a result. Muhammed Ali once said, “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses.” I’ve always loved that quote.

So, if you want to make 2026 your fantasy football masterpiece, let’s get you to the driving range — as in mock drafts. Let’s get those reps in. Bob Knight often said it’s not the will to win that people lack, it’s the will to prepare. And Louis Pasteur liked to say, luck favors the prepared.

You have two choices for fantasy mocks drafts on Yahoo. You can do join our free mock draft lobby, or consider an upgraded experience with our Instant Mock Draft tool, available with a Fantasy Plus subscription. There are things to be learned from each format.

Live mocks will give us a great idea of how things might shake out against other Yahoo drafters. It will help you get used to the draft room (new and improved for 2026!) and the shape of Yahoo ADP. The timing will mimic what you experience in a real draft, so it’s a chance to sharpen your decision making under realistic draft flow.

You have a few options to choose from: Your draft slot and whether you’re doing a snake draft or salary cap draft. Play around with different strategies, see how the positional runs shake out. We all put deep care into our player rankings, but you’ll never truly test how you actually feel until you have to make decisions with the clock bearing down.

Admittedly there can be some challenges with this type of mock draft. They can be time consuming and there are cases where a person or two will bail in the middle of the draft or make an early pick that would never happen in an actual league.

I’ve done a number of public mocks this year, and some industry mocks with colleagues and friends. But there’s one other mock draft option you need to know about. If you’re a Yahoo Fantasy Plus subscriber, you can dial up some Instant Mock Drafts. And you’re gonna fall in love with that tool.

These premium drafts are tailored exactly to your league specs — manager count, roster slots, specific scoring. So you can create the exact atmosphere you want to test. The personalized feel varies from what can be a random collection of people in the mock draft lobby.

You get to pick your draft slot in an Instant Mock. It makes sense to practice at a slot that you’re ticketed for later this summer, in a real draft.

There’s no waiting for users to populate an Instant Mock, so you can draft immediately, and no one jumps out. You’ll be drafting against our algorithm, which also means an Instant Mock can be done a lot quicker.

Yahoo Fantasy editor Ben Zweiman has been taking the Instant Mock Draft tool for an extensive drive, writing a story about picking from different slots. So far he’s drafted from the first, second and third picks. He’ll have stories on drafting all the way through the 12th pick. Be sure to read them for his takeaways and even more on what the tool can offer when it comes to your drafts.

Don’t worry about your Instant Mock practice getting back to your real-life opponents — only you will have access to the results. It’s a perfect place to test out theories, flesh out draft strategies. Get those reps in, iron out any bugs you need to.

No, these Mock Drafts won’t help you with your driver or 7-iron. But we’re working on that, too.

Let me leave with you four the things I prioritize when I mock draft:

Pick the slots you have coming later. Pretty self explanatory. If your big-money league has you picking 12th in a 12 teamer, you want wheel practice. Go get it.

Practice roster construction avoiding one position. I want to see what it feels like to ignore all of the four major positions for several rounds, to get a handle on how I can fill those spots if I choose to do so inexpensively. Do a Zero RB draft, even if you don’t think you’ll run it in two weeks. Try assembling a cheat WR room (I doubt you like it, but try). You can also do the converse of this, over-focus on a position and see what your build becomes.

Ignore your sleepers to test the market. I learned this one from Gene McCaffrey. If he had a personal sleeper picked out, he’d eschew him in the mock, to get a sense of how the rest of the room viewed that player. It would sharpen his expectations for his real drafts.

Get familiar with the applet and player queue. There are lots of bells and whistles to consider. You can line up with any Yahoo analyst you like, or use a consensus approach. You can sort by ADP or projected stats. I am confident this is the best version of the Yahoo Draft client we’ve ever had, but you still want to practice with it. I want you zipping around like a Formula 1 driver during those real drafts.

Practice and prepare today. Get lucky and/or dominate tomorrow. You got this.
