Ex-West Ham United manager Graham Potter has emerged as a candidate for the managerial role at Rangers after Steven Gerrard unexpectedly pulled out of the race to succeed Russell Martin, according to The Daily Mail.
Martin saw his Ibrox stint come to an early end after just four months in charge, which yielded five wins in 17 outings across all competitions.
Gerrard, who previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021 and led the club to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021, was widely expected to return following Martin’s sacking.
However, despite some positive talks, Gerrard decided against rejoining Rangers at this time, citing that the timing was not right for him to come back.
His decision has left the club back at the drawing board in the search for a new manager.
With Gerrard stepping back, Graham Potter has been sounded out by Rangers as a potential replacement.
Though Potter faced difficulties in his latest role at West Ham, including a win rate of just 24%, his past achievements and possession-based playing style make him an intriguing option.
The Rangers board appears willing to consider Potter alongside other managerial options like Danny Rohl and Gary O’Neil, with German coach Rohl reportedly the favourite at this stage.
Rangers currently sit eighth in the league after a poor start to the 2025/26 campaign, during which they have won just one league game from seven outings.
The Glasgow-based outfit will be expected to ramp up their managerial search in the coming week with a view to having a fresh face in the dugout for Saturday’s clash against Dundee United.
