WILLMAR — Dawson-Boyd senior Lindsey Lund knew she was ahead of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City junior Brooke Brekke by one stroke after she parred No. 16.

But, with Brekke already in the clubhouse, the Section 5A individual title was in Lund’s control.

And, for Lund, the Section 5A individual defending champion, she ran with it.

Lund went on to par Nos. 17 and 18 to card a section-winning total of 156, which beat Brekke’s 157 and her junior teammate Alyssa Swedzinski’s 162 on Wednesday at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

“It’s a crazy feeling,” Lund said of her back-to-back section titles. “I’m so grateful for everyone around me — my coaches, my siblings — everyone who has pushed me.”

Lund’s performance comes after a Round 1 that left her emotional on Tuesday night.

She shot a 10-over-par 82 and was in a three-way tie for third place with Swedzinski and Lac qui Parle Valley junior Molly Halvorson.

Lund trailed Brekke by five and freshman teammate Kylar Hjelmeland by four into Round 2.

“At state last year, I was down four strokes and came back and won it, so I know I had done it before,” said Lund, who was the Class A state individual champion in 2024. “Every shot, I told myself, I have to believe in myself. If I don’t believe, then it’s not going to happen.”

That mindset helped Lund shoot a two-over-par 74, the best of any golfer in Round 2, and secure her second consecutive section championship.

Dawson-Boyd, which had a 46 stroke lead following Round 1, increased that margin to 90 strokes by the end of Round 2 where it had three of its golfers place in the top 5.

The Blackjacks finished with a 671. Community Christian School was the runner-up at 761, followed by a third-place finish by LQPV (786) and a fourth-place finish from Benson (822).

Lund’s effort, along with those of her teammates, has given her an opportunity to defend her state championship and her and her team an opportunity to defend their state title.

The Blackjacks’ back-to-back state tournament appearances are the program’s lone.

“To have three girls in the top five speaks to the strength of your team because our section, traditionally, is a very strong one,” said Dawson-Boyd head coach Cory Larson, who also saw Kylar Hjelmeland place fourth with a 167. “It was a good two days.”

Brekke, one of the five individuals who earned state berths, led all golfers through her first 16 holes. Then, a bogey on No. 17, and a four-putt double bogey on No. 18 cost three strokes.

Also earning spots in the Class A state tournament are Halvorson, Community Christian School juniors Margo Klaassen and Hope Reid and LQPV junior Kate Ulstad.
